UAE Corporate Tax Explained for SMEs

Does my business need to register?

Corporate Tax registration is mandatory for nearly all UAE businesses, including Free Zone entities, regardless of whether they expect to owe tax — registration and filing are separate obligations from actually owing tax.

Free Zone businesses: what changes?

A Qualifying Free Zone Person can benefit from a 0% rate on qualifying income, but non-qualifying income (including most income from mainland UAE customers) is taxed at the standard rate. Getting this classification right is one of the highest-stakes decisions in UAE tax planning.

What should SMEs do now?

Register on time, maintain audit-ready bookkeeping (Corporate Tax relies on accurate financial statements), and get a qualifying income assessment done annually if you operate in a Free Zone.
